Why should growing businesses employ local people?

Robin Beveridge, Economic Advisor at Newcastle City Council, helps to drive economic development and inclusion across Newcastle to increase employment levels, and direct the city through its post-Covid economic recovery. 

We sat down with Robin to ask him about Newcastle City Council’s new Jobs@SkillsHub service through the Skills Hub, to find out how it not only helps people currently looking for work in the region find new employment, but also supports local businesses in matching jobseekers to their vacancies.

What is the Skills Hub?

The Skills Hub is a Newcastle City Council-led service, set up in the City Library in 2016. The service brings different organisations together to work collaboratively to meet the needs of residents and employers in Newcastle. This includes providing employment support, careers advice and guidance, and business start-up advice.

Young people and adults living can access this service for free to help them get on in their work and career journey. We also support local employers to employ local people.

Why was Jobs@SkillsHub set up?

Jobs@SkillsHub was set up in summer 2020 amid increasing unemployment figures and redundancies caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The service is about helping Newcastle residents who are unemployed, at risk of redundancy or looking for a change of job, direct access to opportunities such as jobs, training and work experience, as well as helping Newcastle businesses find local people to fill their vacancies. 


How does this new service benefit employers?

Our online job match portal can line up local jobseekers with available jobs based on their experience and skills, and also assists employers in finding providers who can deliver training to potential employees, in order to make them workplace ready. 

Jobs@SkillsHub also provides a free vacancy advertising and handling service to allow employers to fill jobs or work experience opportunities. Our Employment Advisors can also offer general advice about recruitment and assist in navigating the new employment initiatives that have recently been announced by Government, such as additional apprenticeship funding and the Kickstart Scheme, a wage subsidy for recruiting 16-24 year olds.

What makes this service different?  

As well as the ability to job match individuals with jobs, Jobs@SkillsHub also work closely with the National Careers Service to support any businesses who may have staff under threat of redundancy to facilitate access to training funds to re-train along with intensive employability support.

Why should employers post their vacancies?

Many sectors have been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic, however we have also seen many of our businesses adapting, diversifying and seeing huge growth. 

As so many talented people in our region are now facing unemployment due to the adverse impact the pandemic has had on our economy, this is an opportunity for businesses to support our commitment to help the people of our great region get back into employment and contribute to our city’s economic recovery.

What support is available for Job Seekers?

The Jobs@SkillsHub service provides a range of exclusive job vacancies direct from employers, as well as information on events, work experience, apprenticeships and training opportunities to help people build upon their current skillset and develop the right skills for future job opportunities.


Around 16,000 people are currently unemployed in Newcastle, a figure that could rise further as furlough ends and as the city faces ongoing restrictions. This service is not only a way to support the thousands of people who are facing redundancy to find work and new opportunities, its gives employers the platform to tap into local talent.
